I have added a small 225 watt turbine to my small system.  It came from http://usawindgen.com/.  It is simple and easy to set up.

I added a small 10w VAWT to my solar setup.  Bought mine on Ebay.  I'm interested in VAWT's for noise / appearance issues.

Ray,

As of right now I am connected directly to the battery bank.  I do not have enough constant wind to put it through a charge controller.  Wind comes just prior to storms.  If the need arises, I will be on the lookout for a charge controller.  I e-mailed the folks at usawingen and asked about a charge controller and was told I did not need one.  If I had a constant wind, I think I would need to have one.  Until I get another solar pannel set, my batteries are rarely fully charged.  That may change when we get a full day of sun.

Well, as I have nothing better to do, I will now attempt to add one layer to my alternate power hobby.

@larry george...I am using the Coleman Air c40 diversion controller for my system. It is designed for a hybred system as you describe. The controller monitors the state of charge in the battery bank and diverts excess to a "dummy load" which can be anything from resistors, hot water preheater and the like. I think it could also go to a separate battery but not sure on that one. The unit is user frendily and the max volatge limit can be set by the user. It comes pre-set at 14.1 volts which I just left it at. With this unit you run your pma's straight to the batteries and let the controller handle it from there. Works great!

i have my 1st set of solar panels up and working and have been thinking about adding a wind turbine just to see what would happen around here. but i want to build one, not buy one. does anyone have a guide using spare parts on how to diy a wind turbine? looking online so far has shown me lots of pics but no real way to actually build one. btw i want to try using a tredmill motor

Larry, I have gone to MW and talked with Jeff, the owner. The product is priced right and the build quality is first cabin. I like the comment made to me by Jeff, If my product is not right I will stand behind it 100%.

Some of the wind turbines sold never offer spare parts. MW, has every part and can ship anywhere. If you want to go from 5blade rotor to a 11 blade, just buy the blades.

I was impressed by the hands on build and the parts. When I buy MW is the product that is in the lead.
