Big Thanks out to Ray for Starting this Group today. Also if anyone has any question regarding to what alot of Phrase as " Go Big or Go Home " In the Solar world , For free to ask . I will try to answer most of your question. Anytime you Introduce Higher Voltages and more power to your Solar Electric systems you need to be careful and have alot of precautions in place for safety. Also have understanding of MPPT charge controllers and wire sizing helps also.

Sunnyboy 700US here, with three 250 watt mono panels.

Stand alone solar generator with 90w mono, a 20amp programable (Chinese) MPPT, and a 40AH Valence lithium battery feeding a Xantrex SW1000.  I started with an East Penn 92AH AGM, but the lithium out performs it.

Have one of those Xantred modified sine wave units with SLA battery's (just sitting on a shelf), and it is a joke... save your money and build your own like I did.

Hi all,
I don't know if I'll ever fully understand MPPT controllers although I am approaching the point of needing one, along with a true sign wave inverter. Right now I have the following:
Sunforce 30 amp controller
3 145 watt panels
4 6 volt golf cart batteries

I also have 2 harbor freight kits (6 panels and 2 controllers.

What I need to learn:
MPPT Controller; What does it actually do, in laymans terms
Pure sign wave inverter - does it make whatever you're running off the battery supply run longer?

This year, the plan is to add at least two more 145 watt panels, 2 to 4 more golf cart batteries and a new controller as the current 3 145 watt panels that I have max out the 30 amp controller I presently have.

Your electronics were designed to run off pure sine wave.  Some can actually be damaged by modified sine wave, especially anything with a speed control.  I asked the appliance repair man at the store where I bought an Energy Star refrigerator if it could be run on modified sine, and he said it would take out the compressor, and void the warranty.  (So, yes, it will make it "run longer" than with modified, but the same as if plugged into the grid.)  On the other hand, pure resistive loads like a coffeemaker will work fine on modified sine.

As for MPPT, although not necessary, it will yield more wattage from your panels, as it adjusts for the maximum tracking curve.  It is well worth the extra price, and the more watts you have, the quicker the payback.

For your new controller, you may want to get one that allows you to set your bulk, absorb, and float voltages so that you can match your battery specs.  If you don't do all three completely, your batteries will not last as long.

MPPT charge controllers are basically the best thing to use in Higher Voltage and wattage systems. Its track the highest voltage it can use and basically squeezes the most out of your Solar panel power Production.  A good example would be if you have a 100 watt panel and connect it to a PWM charge controller you will see at most maybe 50-60 watts because it directly connects to the battery when charging and connects the panel direclty, So the voltage will drop down to the Batteries Voltage point.  MPPT doesnt do that it track the highest voltage and charges with highest currents it can charge with, In most cases you can get between a a 20-40 % increase in charging power. With MPPT that 100 watt Hooked to a PWM again getting only 50 - 60 watts charge, The MPPT charge could be almost 85-90 watts instead.

I'm not sure I qualify to be in this group yet but I have plans to add more solar power and a bigger battery bank.

Bank 1 - 3 115 ah Deep Cycle marine

Bank 2 - 4 18 ah sealed lead acid(free) used for 12v lighting, not deep discharged

400 watt micro Xantrex inverter

Xantrex ProWatt 1000 PSW inverter
